Business Manual
Why have one?
How will it help my business?
What does it contain?
Why have one? A Business Manual may be considered as a Curriculum Vitae for your business. Its main purpose is to provide prospective major clients with an overview of how your business manages compliance to specified requirements. It can also provide interested parties with an overview of how you manage statutory and regulatory requirements with regard to product or service compliance, employment, occupational health and safety and your environmental obligations.
Whilst being concise, informative and accurate is vital there is a need to beware of disclosing sensitive or confidential detail or revealing too much about your company activities to clients or competitors.
If you are intending to seek ISO management system certification to BS EN ISO9001, BS EN ISO14001 and/or BS OHSAS 18001, then a Business Manual is mandatory.
How will it help my business? A well constructed Business Manual is a window into how your Company manages its operations. It will give existing and prospective clients confidence that you are managing your business efficiently and effectively thereby reducing the risk of providing poor quality products or services.
It provides your employees and other company stakeholders with an awareness of how the business is controlled in terms of product and/or service conformance, occupational health and safety matters and environmental performance.
What does it contain? Unless you are intending to acquire BS EN ISO9001, 14001 and/or OHSAS18001 standard certification then there is no fixed criteria, however, to be of any value it needs to reference the various management controls that your company operates. In ensuring that a manual adds value to your business operations it should contain not less than:
- Your company policies with regard to product / service conformance, health/safety and environmental matters
- The scope of your business operations
- Your company organisation (who reports to whom)
- Reference to your company processes, their interaction and where applicable
- How your company systems address the criteria contained within BS EN ISO9001 Quality, BS EN ISO14001 Environmental and BS OHSAS18001 Occupational health and safety
